How to source products from China

Jun 2026 · 12 min read

The end-to-end playbook for sourcing, verifying and shipping from China.

China remains the deepest manufacturing base in the world, spanning nearly every category and volume. Sourcing well means treating verification and quality control as first-class steps, not afterthoughts.

Finding the right supplier

Start from a verified source rather than a raw marketplace listing. Distinguish factories from trading companies, and match the supplier's specialty to your product — a factory that makes everything makes nothing well.

Verification is non-negotiable

  • Verify the business licence and registration.
  • Confirm the factory with a live video walk-through or third-party audit.
  • Order samples and run a pre-shipment inspection.
  • Pay your supplier in milestones rather than a full deposit up front.

Managing quality and logistics

Book a pre-shipment inspection for any order of meaningful value, and agree on an AQL standard in writing. For freight, get FOB pricing and control the ocean leg through your own forwarder where you can.

Frequently asked questions

How do I source products from China safely?
Buy from a verified source, confirm the supplier is a factory not a trader, verify the business licence and factory, order samples, run a pre-shipment inspection, and pay in milestones rather than a full deposit up front.
How long does it take to import from China?
Expect roughly 25–40 days of production plus 20–40 days of ocean transit, depending on destination. Chinese New Year can add several weeks, so plan orders around it.
